Return to Guadalupe River Hatch Chart

Scuds, also known as freshwater shrimp, are abundant on the lower Guadalupe River. They are fairly good swimmers so fish them with lots of action. We tie them using red thread to make them a little more noticeable. When nymphing, use them as an attractor pattern above a midge or caddis pupae dropper.

Tying Instructions

Thread 6/0 Red
Hook Wet or Caddis #18, #20
Dubbing Olive, Gray, Pink, White
Tail Hackle feather matched to dubbing color
Shellback Plastic bag
Ribbing 4X monofilament
  1. Smash down barb on hook and place in vise
  2. Wrap hook from eye to bend with thread.
  3. Above the bend, tie in several hackle fibers about the length of the hook to make the tail.
  4. Above the bend, tie in a 4 inch piece of 4X monofilament
  5. Above the bend, tie in a rectangular shaped piece of plastic baggie.
  6. Dub the hook from the bend to the eye using a dubbing loop. Dubbing should be coarse and fairly thick to make the legs.
  7. Pull the baggie over to just behind the eye and secure with thread.
  8. Wrap the 4X monofilament to make the ribbing and secure with thread just behind the eye.
  9. Tie off head and cement.
  10. Using the bobbin, pluck out some dubbing under the scud to make legs.
