Prince Nymph

The Prince is a good all purpose fly for imitating mayfly nymphs. Many fly fishers on the Guadalupe River have great success using this fly as an attractor.

Tying Instructions

Thread 6/0 Black
Hook 2X Long Streamer
Size #14
Tail Two brown goose biots
Ribbing Gold tinsel
Weight Brass bead
Collar Brown hackle with feather width two times the length of hook gap
Body Peacock herl
Wing Two white goose biots
  1. Put bead on hook.
  2. Smash down hook barb and place in vise.
  3. Wrap thread from eye to bend.
  4. Tie in two brown goose biots to make tail. Tail should be same length as hook shaft.
  5. Tie in three to four peacock herl strands by the butts.
  6. Tie in a three to four inch piece of gold tinsel
  7. Wrap thread to just behind eye.
  8. Wet fingers and twist herl strands to make herl "rope."
  9. Wind herl rope around hook shaft to eye. Tie off and cut.
  10. Wrap gold tinsel forward spacing it evenly to make ribbing.
  11. Tie in brown hackle by the butt. Wrap hackle once around, tie off and clip.
  12. Pull hackle back toward tail. Make several turns to secure hackle backward.
  13. Tie two whit goose biots on top of fly just behind brass bead to make wings. Biots should be same length as hook shaft.
  14. Whip-finish head and cement.
